Karl Nehammer is apparently withdrawing completely from politics. After the presidency of the Chancellery and the ÖVP presidency, the 52-year-old is now also resigning from his mandate for the National Council.
According to reports, Nehammer has not yet received a letter of resignation. But it should be ready no later than the next meeting of the National Council, on January 22.
After being unable to agree on a three-party coalition with the SPÖ and NEOS and the latter leaving the negotiations, Nehammer also canceled talks with the Social Democrats a week ago. On Saturday evening he announced that he would resign as chancellor and ÖVP leader. The party has now been taken over by former general secretary Christian Stocker, who is now working on a government agreement with the FPÖ.
Schallenberg sworn in as interim chancellor
Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg was entrusted with the chairmanship of the current government until further notice on Friday. However, the interim chancellor is no longer aiming for a ministership under Chancellor Herbert Kickl.
