Economy is on fire: – “Rich people are not responsible for the poverty of others”

Date:

“Club 3” is back with new episodes. Gerald Zmuegg – Managing Director of the Financial Ombudsman, Martin Hagleitner – CEO of Austria Email AG and Leonhard Dobusch – Scientific Director of the Momentum Institute will kick off. Tanja Pfaffeneder will host the show, as usual from the Wagemut Kavalierbar in the Grand Hotel Vienna.

The Austrian economy is struggling with the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine and an energy crisis that has pushed up production costs. What is particularly alarming is that the government debt ratio has risen significantly in recent years. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and ÖVP leader Christian Stocker presented a budgetary roadmap at their first joint appearance. €6.3 billion must be saved this year, without new taxes. A so-called ‘rich tax’ is not on the table. According to Gerald Zmuegg, it also makes no sense: “We don’t need to do asset bashing. The wealth of the rich is not responsible for the poverty of others.”

2024 was a record bankruptcy year. Last year, a total of 6,768 companies had to go to bankruptcy court. Nearly 23,000 workers have lost their jobs. “The bankruptcies are different. Signa’s bankruptcy was based on an unsustainable business model, but when economic conditions changed, the house of cards collapsed,” says university professor Leonhard Dobusch.

End of ‘Get out of oil and gas’
The ‘Get out of oil and gas’ financing campaign is intended to make it easier for private individuals and companies to switch from fossil fuel space heating to a climate-friendly heating system. The end in December came as a big surprise to Martin Hagleitner: “It was a blast, just before Christmas, even though there were still campaigns going on. Financing was above average at 75 percent. As representatives of the sector, we have repeatedly made suggestions on how to increase the pace of renovation – not primarily through subsidies or government charges.”

“Club 3” can be seen on krone.tv from next Tuesday at 9:15 PM!
