In Salzburg, the SPÖ and FPÖ are happy with two different election winners. The ÖVP and the Greens have less to laugh about on election Sunday. The state’s governor showed himself to be an honest loser.
The parties in the Salzburg state parliament eagerly followed the first regional elections of the year. After all, the decision in Burgenland was the first vote after the ÖVP switched from directly saying no to Herbert Kickl during the coalition negotiations. The SPÖ and FPÖ are especially satisfied. The Reds confidently defended first place, the Blues were the only party to win in the Burgenland state parliament (see pages 2 to 5). “Hans Peter Doskozil proves that even in challenging times it is possible to convince people with solutions instead of populist slogans,” says SPÖ leader Peter Eder.

FPÖ leader Marlene Svazek is celebrating a double-digit percentage point increase: “There is one winner, and that is Norbert Hofer and his Freedom Party team in Burgenland,” she says. The series of electoral defeats for the ÖVP continues. “I congratulate State Governor Doskozil on his clear election victory,” said State Governor Wilfried Haslauer. “The regional and supra-regional causes for this must be analyzed calmly internally,” announces Haslauer, who nevertheless expresses his respect for ÖVP top candidate Christian Sagartz.
Despite the loss, the Greens were able to retain their two mandates. “This means that there are two voices for nature and soil protection, city centers and transparency in the Burgenland state parliament. And they will be loud,” said Martina Berthold, leader of the Green Party. SPÖ leader Eder also had to deal with Salzburg on Sunday. As reported, the state government will be reorganized during a government meeting. “Instead of putting all our efforts into finding solutions to our problems, people are satisfied with the way departments, power and money are redistributed within the government,” Eder asks.
