Donald Trump has already signed numerous presidential decrees immediately after his inauguration. At the forefront was, among other things, the order that flags must always be flown at full height at the inauguration of American presidents.
The background is the death of former President Jimmy Carter in late December. Former US President Joe Biden has declared a 30-day mourning period after his death. That also meant flags flew at half-staff at the White House, government buildings, military installations and embassies abroad.
Trump was very annoyed by a mourning flag during his swearing-in ceremony. “The Democrats are pleased that our beautiful American flag will fly at half-staff during my inauguration,” he said. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson then announced that the flags would temporarily be flown to full height, at least at the Capitol.
Carter voted against Trump before he died
Now the newly inaugurated American head of state has ensured that the mourning period will not affect the flying of the flag. The former US president died three months after his 100th birthday on December 29 at his home in Plains, surrounded by his family. Carter was US president from 1977 to 1981. For example, during his time in office he supported the Camp David Accords, which paved the way for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. After his presidency, the Democrat was involved for years through his foundation and in 2002 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. His last years were marked by a serious illness. He was able to fulfill his wish to vote against Trump in the presidential election.
