“Very stupid person” – Trump withdraws personal protection from intimate enemy Bolton

Date:

Donald Trump wasted no time after taking office as US president, issuing dozens of decrees within hours. The Republican has also not forgotten his personal rivals under the motto ‘Vengeance is sweet’, because he has now even withdrawn his former advisor John Bolton, with whom he had a falling out, from the personal protection of the secret service.

“I’m disappointed, but not surprised,” Bolton, who sees the danger of an Iranian assassination plot against him, said in commenting on Trump’s decision.

The Secret Service is responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians and ensures the security not only of active elected officials, but also of some former office holders.

Bolton calls Trump a “very stupid person”
Asked about the 76-year-old during a news conference, Trump said: “We’re not going to protect people for the rest of their lives. Why should we?” It was time to end the protection. He added that he thought Bolton was a “very stupid person” who had been useful to him. The longtime diplomat, considered a hardliner, served as a White House security adviser in 2018 and 2019 but then resigned in a dispute with Trump.

Bolton sees threat from assassins
Bolton noted that the Justice Department filed charges in 2022 against a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the country’s elite military force. The suspect allegedly tried to hire a hitman to kill him, Trump’s ex-adviser wrote. “This threat still exists.”

According to previous information from the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney’s Office believes the assassination plot against Bolton was intended in retaliation for a U.S. missile strike in January 2020 that killed Iranian General Ghassem Soleimani. Tehran has rejected this.

Trump considers sanctions against Russia
Trump is also very active in other ways. On Wednesday evening, he promised further sanctions against Russia, but he also expressed openness to negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. When Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are ready, he will meet with them, Trump said at the White House. Asked whether he would impose sanctions if Putin was unwilling to negotiate, Trump said: “Sounds likely.”

Billion dollar AI project announced
Also on Wednesday evening, Trump announced a project that should create 100,000 jobs in the US: according to this, the ChatGPT developer OpenAI and major technology partners want to invest $500 billion in new data centers for artificial intelligence.

22 US states have filed a lawsuit against the citizenship decree
But Trump also faces headwinds in making his decisions. A total of 22 US states are taking legal action in court against the proposed abolition of US citizenship by birth. Eighteen states, including Democratic-controlled California and New York, filed a lawsuit against a corresponding decree in a federal court in Massachusetts on Tuesday. Four other states later followed suit with a separate lawsuit filed in Washington state.
