Ukraine War – What the conversations bring in for peace

Date:

Despite all the earlier discussions on the American side with the warring parties Russia and Ukraine over a temporary cease -the Fires, the fighting is not yet in sight. This should change with new negotiations in Saudi Arabia when American mediators speak with representatives of Russia and Ukraine.

The first conversations of the Americans with the Ukrainians were already led on Sunday morning, Monday morning the American representatives were the turn of the Russians. There is far to clarify – with unclear prospect of success. Some questions and answers to the state of affairs:

What about the negotiations in Riad?
Washington expects Moscow and Kyiv that the weapons will soon remain silent. Ukraine confirmed his willingness to a 30-day ceasefire beforehand and mainly wants to clarify the technical details. The subject must first be a ceasefish -fires that are limited to energy systems, in which President Wolodyymyr Senskyj emphasized to complete the civil infrastructure.

After a telephone conversation by Kremlin Chief Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Moscow emphasized that a fire brigade break for air strikes against energy systems was already in force on the Russian side. Putin had instructed that after the conversation on Tuesday. However, the attacks on alleged military goals in Ukraine with drones and sliding bombs continue. Before ending this success, it would need further conversations from a Russian point of view – about the conditions of Moscow. Kiev sees the intention of Moscow to run the war.

From a Russian perspective, Riyad is also supposed to be an initiative for safe shipping in the Black Sea, in the Chamber the American proposal for a fire brigade break for the water. Russia had terminated an earlier agreement with Türkiye, namely enabling the safe transport of Ukrainian grain over the Black Sea. Ukraine wants security guarantees after the strategically important port of Odessa has repeatedly shot down by the Russians.

Who talks to whom – and how do they walk away?
The special punishment of US President Donald Trump for Ukraine stated in advance Kellogg that various teams have carried out the negotiations. In addition to his team, there is one of the National Security Advisor of the US, Mike Waltz, and one of the US Department of Foreign Affairs. Kellogg said on the one hand that on the one hand spoke with the Ukrainians in a room, in another with the Russians. A residential work traffic between the parties is planned.

For example, Ukraine sends Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow to the conversations. President Senskyj had appointed his head of Lawn Andrij Jermak as the main negotiator. This time, Ukrainians nor Russians will send representatives of their foreign ministries, as both parties have announced.

According to Kremlin, Russia is represented in Riad with foreign politician Georgi Karassin, head of the Foreign Committee for the Federation Council and the Secret Service Sergei Besseda. The 70 -year -old Besseda is a consultant of the domestic intelligence service FSB, worked in Kiev in Crisis Times and is considered a confidant of Kremlin Chief Putin. At FSB he once led the fifth service, which is responsible for the espionage and control of countries of the former Soviet Union – especially Ukraine – as media reported.

What are the objectives of our negotiators in conversations?
A short -term goal from the Americans is a fire brigade break for the Black Sea. Trump and Putin spoke about this a few days ago in their joint telephone conversation and corresponded to negotiations. In principle, Washington is involved in moving Putin to quickly end the aggression war. Trump had promised a rapid war end in the election campaign, but is hardly progressing now. How much influence he actually has on Putin remains uncertain. The question is also how Trump’s presentation of the negotiations is after his conversations with Putin and Senskyj. After that there were conflicting statements from all pages about what was really discussed.

Steve Witkoff, Steve Witkoff, should currently have the best contact in the Kremlin. He was welcomed twice by Putin and then commented on the Kremlin chef. “I don’t want to sound like an eternal optimist, but I am very, very optimistic that we can bring the two parties together,” Witkoff said with a view to the conversations in Saudi Arabia. In the long term, the United States also aims to improve the relationships with Moscow – not least because of the growing concern about the narrow alliance between Russia and China.

What do the conversations mean for Ukraine?
For Ukraine, the conversations are about their own survival. Military is under heavy pressure. If the country loses the support of the West and therefore helps the military, it can hardly resist the Russian. So Kiev has to present the White House at least its goodwill, even if the concessions acted in advance for peace for access to NATO, but also in large areas in favor of the attacker Russia-Put pressure on leadership. According to surveys, half of the population is still strictly against the task of their own areas.

It is important for Ukraine that she receives security guarantees in exchange for her own concessions. Trust in the opponent of Russia is low. That is why KYIV relies on international peacemakes.

How does Russia behave?
Given the successes at the front, Russia plays for temporary areas and wants to increase pressure on Ukraine to force increasing concessions. In Russian comments there is Kremlin Chef Putin, a political new start in the country with a Russian -friendly leadership.

Moscow is ready for negotiations about a peaceful solution in the conversations with the Americans. At the same time, the Kremlin has increasing militarization in Europe and accuses it in particular to be interested in the EU to continue the fighting with its arms deliveries and the “financing of the KIV regime”.

Time and again Putin made it clear that there could be no end to the fight without putting an end to Western weapons on Ukraine and without putting the mobilization in the neighboring country. It also says that Ukraine does not have NATO and at the least abandoned its areas that are controlled by Russia, which is about one fifth of the country.

What outlook for success are there?
A quick solution cannot be seen in this complex conflict. In the election campaign, US President Trump promised to quickly end the conflict and is therefore put under pressure to succeed. However, he mainly encounters a hard negotiating position on the Russian side. Until now, Russia does not want to become involved in the cease -the fires proposed by the United States and supported for 30 days by Ukraine not to get Kiev in the war.

Kremlin Chief Putin, who is considered a smart negotiator after more than 25 years, has to keep Trump happy with small concessions. Above all, as he says, he deals with a resumption of relationships with the United States and an end to the sanctions, so that trade between the two countries blooms again and wins the economy.

A fully nourished -however -the fires is extremely unlikely, as long as Europe continues its military support from Ukraine, says Russian political scientist Tatjana Stanowaya. Moscow would be satisfied because she believes that Trump would bring the next Europe to hire the help for Ukraine. Putin is not about a complete conquest of Ukraine, for which he has no reserves. “His strategy is to have a surrender of Ukraine about her self -knowledge that the resistance has no perspective,” says Stanowaya. So far, however, this is also unlikely.
