Russia’s leaders view Washington’s latest sanctions threats as “nothing out of the ordinary” and remain calm.
As reported, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced “punitive tariffs and other sanctions” against Moscow if the Kremlin does not quickly sign a peace deal with Ukraine. “I don’t want to hurt Russia,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform. “I love the Russian people and have always had a good relationship with President Putin,” the Republican admitted and demanded of Russian President Vladimir Putin: “Stop this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse.”
The next day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We don’t see any particularly new elements here.” The Russian economy is developing stably despite some problems, Peskov said. He also rejected Trump’s exaggerated death toll of 60 million Soviet war dead and his statement that he appreciated Russian assistance in World War II. The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that Russia did not help, but rather made the main contribution to the victory over fascism. It was the United States that took on a helping role. But Russia will never forget this help. Historical research also assumes 27 million war dead in the Soviet Union.
Invitation to the annual military parade
Nevertheless, Peskov indirectly invited Trump to participate in the traditional military parade in Moscow. “We hope that Americans and President Trump will share with us the joy of celebrating the 80th anniversary of the victory,” he said. Russia celebrates May 9 every year as Victory Day over Hitler’s fascism. There will also be a military parade on Red Square.
