Related from prison – Trump grants radical opponents of abortion grace

Date:

US President Donald Trump has granted grace to a number of opponents of abortion who were prosecuted for related crimes. There are 23 people, the Republican explained during the signing ceremony in the White House. “They could never have been prosecuted. “It’s my great honor to sign this,” said Trump.

Trump later told reporters that the detainees would soon be released. According to reports in the American media, these include various activists who were convicted in 2020 for blocking an abortion clinic in the capital Washington.

Now the grace should have been serving the activist for five years in prison
In the US it is explicitly forbidden to deny women access to clinics or to threaten them. Radical opponents of abortion argued that they simply exercised their right to freedom of expression in this way. Special attention received the case of an activist who, according to the New York Times, has now received grace and who was sentenced to almost five years in prison last year as largely responsible for the protest.

In some cases, abortions are almost completely prohibited
The grace of Trump came just before the March for Life, an annual demonstration of anti-abortion activists in Washington. This time the organizers expect a maximum of 150,000 participants. Prominent speakers include vice-president JD Vance and the governor of Florida, Ron Desantis, who recently signed a strict ban on abortion in his state.

States can make their own decisions about abortions
During his first term of office, Trump created a conservative majority in the Supreme Court, who destroyed the pioneering ruling on national abortion rights in 2022. Since then, the States decided individually about their legislation. In many states ruled by the Republicans, abortions are now almost completely prohibited – in some cases even in the event of rape or incest.

During the election campaign, however, Trump distanced himself from the uncompromising anti-abortion line of some hardliners in his party-probably also because, according to investigations, most people in the US support a limited right to abortion.
