US President Donald Trump has ordered the release of thousands of previously classified government documents related to the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy. “All will be revealed,” he announced. Publication plans will now also be presented for the cases of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
Trump ordered the intelligence coordinator and attorney general to provide him with a plan within 15 days for the full release of documents related to President Kennedy’s death.
In the case of Senators Kennedy and King, 45 days are allocated for this.
According to the U.S. National Archives, many of the approximately five million total documents, photos, videos, audio recordings and artifacts related to the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy have been accessible since the late 1990s.
Files under lock and key due to security concerns
Trump had already promised during his first term to publish the final files. In 2017, a number of previously kept secret documents were made public. However, Trump himself decided at the time – mainly at the instigation of the American foreign secret service CIA and the Federal Police FBI – to keep some files under lock and key after these authorities expressed their concerns about security.
His successor Joe Biden also had thousands of documents about the Kennedy assassination published – but not all of them. According to US media reports, 99 percent of the documents will be publicly accessible with the most recent publication in 2023.
Apparently hundreds of deportations have already taken place
Trump also shows drive in other areas. A few days after taking office, his government arrested and deported hundreds of migrants. “538 criminal illegal migrants” were arrested and “hundreds” of others were deported by army planes, his spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Friday.
Trump has pardoned abortion opponents
He also pardoned 23 abortion opponents who were in prison for related crimes. In the US, it is expressly forbidden to deny or threaten women from entering clinics, as was the case with the blockade of an abortion clinic in the capital Washington, after which some of those now pardoned were arrested.
“They should never have been prosecuted. “It is a great honor for me to sign this,” he said, explaining the move. Trump also wants to get back in touch with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as he explained on Thursday evening.
Trump is considering abolishing emergency management authority
After visiting the state of North Carolina, which was hit hard by Storm Helene in the fall, he also announced a fundamental reform of disaster protection. He wants to restructure – or even completely abolish – the American disaster protection agency Fema. This doesn’t do its job, he said. Next he wanted to visit the wildfire-ravaged state of California.
