Brussels goes to Donald Trump on a confrontation course: EU -military chef Robert Brieger brought the efforts of European soldiers on the Danish island of Greenland, claimed by the US president.
“The island is of great importance from a geopolitical point of view and also has a great relevance from a security policy perspective,” said the chairman of the EU -soldier committee (EUMC) and former Austrian staff chief of the “Welt Am Sonntag”.
“In my opinion it would be logical to not only station the American armed forces in Greenland, but also to station EU soldiers in the future. That would be a strong signal and could contribute to stability in the region, “emphasized the chairman of the EU committee, in which the general staff heads of the 27 EU member states are represented.
In the end, such a step is a political decision, Brieger added. He continued that Greenland was a Danish territory abroad, which was not part of the EU. “Nevertheless, Europeans – such as the US – have interests in Greenland.”
Greenland is becoming increasingly important
There are rich raw material deposits in the region and important traffic routes for international trade led beyond Greenland. “With increasing ice melting due to climate change, this also creates a certain potential for tension in Russia and possibly China.”
In the meantime, the new American State Secretary Marco Rubio contacted his Danish colleague Lars Løkke Rasmussen. The latter then announced that the 20 -minute conversation went in a “good and constructive tone”. They spoke about Ukraine, European safety and the situation in the middle. The safety of the North Pole area was not on the agenda. “But it was agreed that this subject will be discussed later between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.”
The US Department of Foreign Affairs announced at the end of Friday that Rubio had again confirmed to the telephone conversation “The Power of Relations” between the US and Denmark. Trump recently confirmed several times that he wanted to make the autonomous area of Denmark part of the United States. He has not excluded to use military or economic power to move Denmark to transfer.
Rejection of Copenhagen
The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reported on January 15 that she had made a phone call and told him that Greenland had to decide on any independence. The Financial Times reported on Friday that the phone call between Frederiksen and Trump was very heated. Trump emphasized that he decided to take over Greenland, seriously mine.
The Greenland Prime Minister Mute Eggede, who is committed to the independence of Greenland, has repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale and that the population must decide on the future.
