The President of Panama has excluded all negotiations with the United States about the Panama Canal. “Panama’s sovereignty (…) is clear that there is no discussion about this subject,” said José Raúl Mulino. US President Donald Trump had previously placed claims on the Panama Canal.
He had said Trump several times that control over the important Waterweg should be at the US. Mulino had already rejected these claims. Now he took the coming first trip abroad through the new US State Secretary Marco Rubio to Central America as an opportunity. According to American media, stops in Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic are planned.
The Panama Canal is 82 kilometers long and connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. It was built by the Engineering Corps of the US Army in the early 20th century. On December 31, 1999, however, the United States handed over the canal administration to Panama. The recently deceased Democratic US President Jimmy Carter had negotiated this.
Is there a discussion about self -defense?
As reported, Donald Trump has already made claims to Canada and Greenland. These are just “objects of geopolitics” for him, said Mexican economist Carlos Heedia Zubieta. These regional claims are a “wake -up call” for the US and throughout Europe, said Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.
“Trump sends a very clear signal to Europe that time is over when Europe could believe that the Americans will pay the safety calculation (…). Now we will lead a discussion about the willingness of Europe to defend self -defense (…). In a recent study, 85 percent of the Groenlanders surveyed spoke against a takeover of the United States. Six percent was undecided.
