An acquittal for Sebastian Kurz, but no end to the investigation. Since 2021, WKSTA has also been investigating Sebastian Kurz in the Survey Causa. If there is an indictment, it will only be completed at the earliest in the summer of 2026.
It is a stage victory and, no doubt, a symbolic victory for Sebastian Kurz. But the acquittal as a result of false statements was only the warm -up training in the fight for his innocence. His resignation as Chancellor was activated by the house search in the federal chancellery because of the survey affair. Here is determined against unfaithfulness and bribery, with a punishment of a maximum of ten years in prison.
However, what about this cause? After all, the investigation began in the autumn of 2021. The criminal law already includes 160,000 pages and more than 5700 file numbers. But an indictment will not be ready for the summer of 2026, experts estimate. The start of the process would only be in 2027.
Thomas Schmid, the former Secretary General in the Ministry of Finance and former Confidante of Kurz, is now an important witness to the indictment. Opinion researcher Sabine Beinschab also received the most important witness status.
Three years of delay for viewing chat
Countless witnesses were interviewed, including former Spö Chancellor Christian Kern, former finance minister Gernot Blümel or former Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterhner. The former Chancellor and his confidants, who are in accordance with the status, have not yet been questioned by the WKSTA. According to WKSTA, it is the suspect’s wish to only testify to the most important public prosecutors when the investigation is completed.
That can still take. The reason for this is the evaluation of the chats of a riot. There is a right to object here because of the editorial secret. A judge – before the WKSTA gets hold of the chats – must see every tranche whether the editorial secret is not being violated. This procedure alone indicates the WKSTA, causes a loss of three years.
