A cousin of the destroyed ruler Bashar al-Assad was arrested in Syria. ATEF NAJIB is accused of organizing the violent approach in Daraa, south of Syrian, the starting point of the 2011 protests.
Najib was arrested in the coastal city of Latakia in the northwest of the country, reported the Sana news agency on Friday, with reference to security circles. He had been transferred to the responsible authorities “to be brought to court for the crimes he has committed to the Syrian people and to be held responsible,” said Sana.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Najib is the highest representative of the cases Assad government, which was arrested on December 8 since the acquisition of Islamists.

State violence after protest led to a massacre in Daraaa
The protest movement against Assad started on March 15, 2011 in Daraa. Earlier, 15 students had been arrested on suspicion of the government’s writing against the government on walls in the city. Residents described that the students were tortured. This led to a protest in which her release was requested and that ended in a massacre.

Najib, who is held responsible for the brutal state approach to the protests, was released shortly thereafter by the Syrian government. He is on an American sanction list together with other representatives of the Syrian government.
