Because of the location in a swamp in which Alligators live, the new deportation -prison in Florida is said to be safe for the break, according to US President Donald Trump. But only a few days after the opening the first problems appear: when it rains, the tents are built under water.
The detention center in the Everglades was only proudly opened by Trump on Tuesday. Shortly after the head of state had left, a summer rain that was typical of South Florida – broke and caused chaos in the facility consisting of tents: penetrated water.
The highest disaster protection leader of the state had previously browned that the system could withstand the winds of a hurricane in category 2. But the facility apparently cannot defy the rainfall: as the “Miami Herold” reported, about 3.8 centimeters raining on the site on Tuesday afternoon.
Sewing of the tents were sealed
In videos you can see how tent roof and walls in the storm, which lasted about 45 minutes, trembled. Water penetrated the side. An embarrassing breakdown, which apparently has already been remedied. “At night the suppliers sealed all the seams at the basis of the structures so that water could penetrate during the heavy storm, but this was minimal,” said Stephanie Hartman, deputy director of the Disaster Protection department.
The facility is called “Alligator Alcatraz”, based on the famous and notorious prison island. The predators who live in the area must make an escape impossible. Trump’s government announced that they wanted to deport eleven million people without valid residence documents. The new facility is to create a “cheap and innovative option” to “deport criminal illegal immigrants massively”, as explained Minister of Protection of Homeland Kristi Nem.
However, the facility also causes a lot of criticism: it was said from the ranks of the Democrats that the deportation camp was “dehumanized” and the target was to cause suffering. Environmental activists are concerned that waste water from the system can harm the sensitive ecosystem. Up to 5000 people must be able to be housed in “Alligator Alcatraz”.
