National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) is in New York until Friday. The program includes conversations with politicians and experts, including about artificial intelligence and the war in Ukraine.
On Monday, Sobotka met with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and New York Mayor Eric Adams. The politician spoke to Guterres about, among other things, Austria’s role at the United Nations and strengthening national parliaments.
Artificial intelligence was also discussed in this context. This could have an impact on international peace and stability, Sobotka said. At the same time, he also sees dangers for democracy, according to a parliamentary statement. Artificial intelligence must therefore be regulated even better.

Hopes for a solution to the grain agreement
Another topic of discussion was the war in Ukraine. Sobotka condemned this in New York and discussed the global consequences of the expired grain agreement. He hopes for a solution soon. The agreement to export Ukrainian grain exports was reached in July 2022 through the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey. Nearly 33 million tons of grain were exported.
Sobotka discussed current challenges and strategies against crime and dealing with migration with New York Mayor Eric Adams, among other things. Both sides emphasized their cooperation in training students.
During the stay in New York, Austria’s role in the fight against anti-Semitism will also be discussed. The chairman of the National Council will be in the United States until Friday.
