Procedure Initiated – 2400 Syrians can leave Austria

Since the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, 2400 disclosure procedures have been initiated by Syrians in Austria. Moreover, 55 percent fewer asylum applications were made, the Ministry of the Interior said on Friday.

After the fall of the Assad regime in December, Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced a return and deportation program and exposing the asylum decisions for Syrians. Now in January 2025 and 55 percent were fewer asylum applications from this group than in January a year ago.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 618 Syrians for asylum in January. In the comparison month in the previous year there were still 1392. They are currently applying an application, these are registered but not edited. Almost 80 Syrians voluntarily left Austria. Moreover, hundreds of consultations were held to support people in organizing the return. Travel Syrians voluntarily, they receive up to 1000 euros. The protection status is subsequently withdrawn with the permanent return.

Karner: Asylum protection temporarily
“Syria now needs its citizens to be rebuilt,” said Karner. Asylum is only temporary protection that can no longer be granted if there are no reasons for it. In the past, NGOs such as Caritas and Diakonie had criticized the procedure and pointed to the confusing, chaotic situation in Syria.

According to Karner, criminal people must first be deported and those who do not want to integrate and work. “
