Against the background of approaching American rates, the EU and Canada now want to deepen their trade relationships.
The figures about the existing trade agreement are really good, said the Minister of Trade of Kanada, Mary NG on Saturday from the Reuters news agency. “But what else can we do to help Canadian companies get a foot on the ground in each of the 27 Member States?” She asked, referring to the EU. “And what else can we do to achieve the same in Canada?”
The focus in discussions with the EU would include critical minerals and smaller companies. NG met on Saturday with EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic. On Friday she had conversations in Geneva with the general manager of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. After completing a free trade agreement of 2017, bilateral trade between the EU and Canada increased by 65 percent. In addition, a partnership for raw materials was agreed in 2021.
EU is especially interested in metal
The EU has shown a special interest in metals that are considered crucial for the energy transition – such as Kobalt, Lithium and Nickel. Canada wants to diversify its export.
These efforts have been given urgency after the re -election of US President Donald Trump. Trump threatened to take rates against Canada and Mexico, the introduction of which was initially postponed. According to NG, Canada could take the WTO at WTO into account if the service should ultimately be imposed.
