Government advises – gas storage tanks are less than half full

Date:

Less than 100 gigawatt hours per day flowed through Austria’s gas storage facilities. On Friday they were 45.20 percent full. Since this value “dropped significantly” last week, the cabinet will discuss the situation on Tuesday.

Their goal is to fill the storage tanks to 80 percent before the start of the heating season. More than 33,000 gigawatt hours must be stored for this. On Friday, exactly 99.4 gigawatt hours of gas was stored. The majority flowed to the OMV storage facilities in Tallesbrunn and Schönkirchen (Lower Austria). On the other hand, gas was extracted from the Astora storage site in Haidach (Salzburg). This is administered by Germany.

GSA storage in Haidach still empty
GSA’s storage facility, which is also located in Haidach, is still empty. The Austrian government has recently amended the Gas Industry Act so that it can be filled in the same way in the future. Tyrol and Vorarlberg, among others, are supplied with gas via Haidach and Germany, as these two federal states are not connected to the gas network in Eastern Austria.

On March 30, Austria announced the gas supply warning level. Before the government discusses the situation, the FPÖ announced that it would convene the National Security Council.

A quarter heats with gas
Security of supply is currently a problem for many European countries. For example, the Swiss government recently warned of a gas shortage in the winter, because Russian stocks would decrease. According to the local energy minister, Simonetta Sommaruga, there should be “first and foremost necessary restrictions, for example for escalators or neon signs”. About 300,000 households in Switzerland heat with gas. According to Statistics Austria, about a quarter of all households in Austria are affected.
