ÖVP, Spö and Neos have agreed to stop the reunification of the family of beneficiaries with immediate effect – albeit temporarily. And this will be introduced on Wednesday at the Council of Ministers and must be implemented.
The reason for this is that the recording capacities of Austria are limited and especially the family reunification contains the school system. In 2023 alone, there were 9254 access from family members who are entitled to protection, including 6443 minors. In 2024 there were 7762, including 5331 minors. The number of applications (see image) was considerably higher.
That is why the Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner has informed the EU committee that Austria will use Article 72 TFEU and will stop family judges. The article contains the maintenance of public order and the protection of internal safety – a condition for such measures. The upcoming council of ministers will decide that the national rights regulations, in addition to setting up the emergency clause at the European level, will also be adjusted to stop the reunification of the family.
