US President Donald Trump is said to have instructed the army to develop “credible military options” to guarantee unhindered access to the Panama Canal. Panama responded in horror.
Trump had repeatedly made it clear in the past that the United States wants to have the channel back. The extent to which the US Army should intervene is unclear so far.
Trump: “Improve safety”
At the beginning of March, Trump said in the US Congress: “To further improve our national security, my government will regain the Panama Canal and we have already started.”
Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino (65) was shocked by the recent threats of Trump. “In the name of Panama and all Panamaianans, I reject this renewed insult to the truth and our dignity as a nation,” he wrote to X.
Towards the end of 1999, the US government checked the channel and then handed it to Panama. At that time, the last American soldier also left the country. The canal is located in the narrowest point of the district between North and South America and is considered one of the most strategically important waterways in the world.
