The Federal Congress of the Greens opened in Vienna on Saturday with continued cheering for Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler. Her party colleague Werner Kogler was declared the Green Party’s top candidate for the National Council elections on Saturday with 94.5 percent.
This week, Gewessler almost single-handedly voted for the EU renaturation law, against the wishes of the ÖVP, shaking off the mantle of a docile small coalition partner for her party in time for the election campaign.
“Green history written”
The more than 200 delegates in the Ankerbrotfabrik in Vienna-Favoriten recognized this with a standing ovation. “Dear Leonore, that was an endless victory, an endless victory for nature,” cheered Viennese co-party leader Judith Pühringer: “You have written green history this week.”
The conference program includes the selection of lists for the National Council election on September 29. The top candidate is federal spokesperson and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler.
94.5 percent for Kogler
Five years ago he had 98.58 percent support from his party. On Saturday he was declared the Green Party’s top candidate for the NR elections with 94.5 percent.
In total, the delegates vote for twelve places on the federal list. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, Justice Minister Alma Zadić, club boss Sigrid Maurer and Secretary General Olga Voglauer also want to be at the front.
In the last National Council elections in 2019, the Greens obtained 13.9 percent, but surveys show that the current ruling party is far below that. However, neo-husband Kogler’s goal is to continue participating in government, as he recently emphasized.
