In the American church there is criticism of the Trump government’s decision to turn on the crane of money abroad “voice for America” (VOA). This step is especially difficult to take international journalists from authoritarian states whose Visa were bound by their employment contracts. They are confronted with political persecution at home.
The government of Trump had the American foreign broadcasters-the largest of the “Voice of America”, founded in 1942 percreet, which was previously painted on the “United States Agency for Global Media” continuous financial support. Reporters without Borders (RSF) criticized the step sharply, because there is now a formally independent broadcaster, which are often also present in regions with autocratic governments and send independent information. At VOA, hundreds of employees received their dismissal on Sunday evening in a total of 47 language services.
The Ukrainian Catholic archbishop of Philadelphia Borys Gudziak also referred to the far-reaching importance of this step. He was ashamed of “America his own voice silence,” he said, according to Kathpress. What the Soviet Union was not successful and from which authoritarian regimes such as in Russia, Iran or China could only dream to become a reality.
Because of the work behind bars
For decades, oppressed peoples could have counted on VOA’s reliable report. International journalists whose visas were bound by their employment contracts and who should now leave the country within 30 days are mainly influenced. Among them were media professionals from China, Pakistan and other authoritarian states that are being prosecuted for their journalistic activity for VOA. Gudziak called Gudziak on the Wit -Russian journalist Ihar Losik, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his work for Radiofree Europe, Vladyslav Yesypenko in Russia and Farid Mehralizada in Azerbaijan.
“Mission to stand up for the truth”
The Ukrainian service of VOA is also affected, the Archbishop continued. Two excellent journalists, Ostap Yarysh and Oleksii Kovalenko, would have received their resignation during a visit to Washington. Despite the release, the “Mission to stand for the truth” continues. Gudziak paid tribute to the dedication of all former employees and expressed his hope that her work was not in vain. “Don’t lose any faith. Let the Ukrainians inspire you who sacrifice their lives and existence for freedom and justice,” said the Ukrainian spiritual.
