Federal Council agrees – Financial package is a step closer

According to the German Bundestag, the Federal Council has now also approved the Union and SPD’s loss of financial package. A change in the basic law is required for the package. Now German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier still has to check and sign the law.

As in the Bundestag, a majority of two thirds were also necessary in the Federal Council, so that the basic law can be changed. The majority of two two came about with 53 of the 69 votes. 46 votes would have been needed. The Bundestag had cleaned up the way for the package on Tuesday.

More money for defense and investments in infrastructure
The financial package from Union – ie CDU/CSU – and SPD stipulates that the debt is being detached in the basic law, so that more can be spent on defense. In addition, a special fund for additional investments in the infrastructure and to achieve climate neutrality must be set up by 2045 for an amount of 500 billion. With the amendment to the basic law, the countries can take out limited loans to a limited extent to a limited extent.

Approval of the federal council for a long time
The two -third majority in the Federal Council was long considered unsafe because it was unclear how the state governments would vote in which Links, FDP, free voters and BSW would. Bavaria, however, had announced a yes on Monday. On Friday morning, Mecklenburg-Westers Pomerania and Bremen also announced that they would agree. There are SPD Link -Governings in both countries. The approval of the state governments with the exclusive government participation of the SPD, Union and De Groenen was already considered safe.
