The Basque government is investing six million in the renewal of the Santa Marina Palliative Care Unit

Date:

The renewed unit covers approximately 1,600 square meters and consists of 30 individual rooms with an area between 20 and 30 square meters each.

The Basque government has inaugurated the renewed palliative care unit of the Santa Marina Hospital in Bilbao. It needs an investment of more than six million euros, it is on the third floor of the hospital, it covers around 1,600 square meters and has 30 individual rooms, with an area between 20 and 30 square meters each.

The new unit of the Santa Marina Sanatorium was born to become a reference center in terms of chronicity, the elderly and palliative care.

In his speech, Pradales has thanked health workers for their work to facilitate the end of a decent life in the palliative care department of the Bilbao Hospital.

“Palliative care goes beyond a medical service because they also help, listen, relieve and give comfort in very difficult and fragile times for people. That is why our dedication and responsibility of the public atmosphere can be offered a care system and a more human medicine that does not leave us in peace,” said Pradales.

He emphasized that the inaugurated unit has “The best human and material means“And that” humanization and empathy “form the basis of the entire service.

“In this essential work and sometimes little recognized, professionals play a fundamental role. Because you are a lighthouse that illuminates in dark days,” he adds.

The extensive reform of the palliative care unit of the Santa Marina sanatorium will significantly improve the intimacy and support of around 600 patients a year and offer a more pleasant and safer environment for patients, their families and their health staff.

It will also optimize the use of sources that offer them maximum efficiency in bed management. The improvement coincides with the palliative care plan of Euskadi 2023-2027 of the Ministry of Health of the Basque government, which aims to offer personalized and worthy attention in all stages of life.

The palliative care unit of the Santa Marina Hospital will offer extensive and personalized care that, in addition to meet the physical needs of patients, will meet emotional, social and spiritual aspects.

The new unit, which has Avant -garde facilities, has included news in patient care with the publication, including a ‘guidance guide in the past days’, a valuable source for family members and employees who strive to offer refuge in difficult times, information, rest and support during the process.

Likewise, the Revipal Study has been launched in collaboration with the Biobizkaia Health Research Institute. It investigates the way to use Virtual Reality as a therapeutic method to improve the wells of patients in palliative care. The study evaluates the effectiveness of a virtual reality tool that is designed to offer compelling experiences with the aim of causing relaxation and improving the mood.

The use of virtual reality in this context is a promising strategy to relieve symptoms such as anxiety, depression or emotional discomfort, whereby patients offer the opportunity to escape from their hospital environment through sensory experiences.
