The American Vice President JD Vance has arrived for a controversial visit to Greenland. He landed late on Friday afternoon (CET) on the American military basic Pituffik. There he wants to officially get an idea of the security situation in the Arctic and meet the stationed American troops.
The basis is considered as the world’s most northern military facility in the United States and is approximately 1500 kilometers north of the capital of Greenland. It is important for global rocket defense and space monitoring. Vance is the highest representative of the Trump camp, who visits Greenland. Unlike the son of President Donald Trump Jr., neither a trip to Nuuk nor contact with the local population is planned.
Shortly after the landing of Vance and his wife Usha, the first recordings were published. The two may only stay on the island for a few hours, which is at Denmark. The program contains a briefing about the security situation in the Arctic and a meeting with the American soldiers who are stationed there.
Trump criticized Denmark
In recent months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly talked about wanting to take control of Greenland. He justifies this with national and international security. He criticized the American NATO allied Denmark several times.
Both this and the Greenland politicians have repeatedly clearly pronounced the intentions of Trump. The majority of the islanders are also against becoming part of the United States. Greenland has never been in the focus as now. Vance’s visit is a provocation in Denmark, as the “Kroon” recently reported.
