The Hungarian government is working on a controversial draft law that is intended to make the temporary withdrawal of Hungarian citizenship possible for certain double citizens. The draft was introduced by a government member in parliament on Wednesday evening and should be hired without major obstacles.
According to the draft law, this measure can be applied to persons classified as “state -threatening” by the authorities. Critics fear that the regulations can be used to silence unpleasant voices.
The provisions only relate to double citizens, whose second citizenship does not come from an EU country or from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland.
Citizenship withdrawal is only limited
The proposed time limit is particularly remarkable: the discretion of Hungarian citizenship should apply for a maximum of ten years. Such temporary regulations are internationally unusual because citizenship is usually permanent.
Hungarian-American double citizens who work in human rights organizations can, for example, be affected. The withdrawal of citizenship would mean for them that they can be referred to the country – a possibility that does not exist for Pure Hungarian citizens.
Change in the law causes violent criticism
The planned change in the law causes violent criticism of the opposition and human rights organizations. They warn of possible abuse and a further limitation of fundamental rights in Hungary.
