Democrat Cory Booker broke a record with a speech from President Donald Trump’s policy for more than 25 hours. After the Member of Parliament visibly ended his marathon approach, the applause opened in the parliamentary Chamber.
The senator from the state of New Jersey started his speech in the parliamentary Chamber on Monday evening (local time) – and was only ready after 25 hours and five minutes. He had broken the record after 24 hours and 19 minutes.
According to the rules of the congress room, a senator can speak as long as he wants – as long as the word is not withdrawn and no special restrictions apply to the debate. He must be constantly and may only comment on minimal interruptions.
Flaming speech against Donald Trump
Booker gave a passionate speech and explained: “This is the time to feel fear of what happens to your neighbors and to turn this fear into courage!” The power in the hands of the people is greater than that of the powerful, all round Trump.
The last minutes of his marathon address:
He concluded optimistically: “I believe that the story will show that we have grown at that time (…) that we merged when our president spread lies and sowing fear.”
According to the American media, the speech, which had previously been the longest in the history of the US Senate, lasted more than one day: in 1957 Senator Strom Thurmond spoke a total of 24 hours and 18 minutes to prevent the civil rights law.
