According to media reports, the US government is investigating the use of drone attacks on drug cartels on Mexican soil under ex-president Donald Trump. The Trump government should want to land a massive blow to the fentanyl smuggling, but a possible collaboration with Mexico is still unclear.
As reported by NBC News, referring to current and former representatives of the military, secret services and law enforcement authorities, the plan is at an early stage of discussion. The aim is to attack logistics networks and leading characters that are largely involved in smuggling the synthetic opioid in the US.
Common thing with Mexico?
Conversely, conversations run between the White House, the Ministry of Defense and American intelligence services about possible joint military actions with the Mexican government. It is unclear whether specific suggestions have already been made to Mexico. However, according to the sources, the United States is not excluded and they are discussed internally as a “last remedy”.
The monitoring activities of the United States in Mexico have recently been considerably expanded. According to President Claudia Sheinbaum, the surveillance flights took place with the approval of the Mexican government. The goal is to make such a “target deck” called – a list of possible goals – explained as a source of NBC news. Vehicles, warehouses, infrastructure and people from the cartel networks can be found on this list.
Going alone would be delicate under international law
A possible military single from the United States would be delicate under international law. Arturo Sarukhán, former Mexican ambassador in Washington, said that such a step would be a “violation of international law” and could damage bilateral relationships enormously. At the same time, however, he also criticized the failures of the Mexican government in the fight against drug trafficking.
Former Defense Minister Mike Esper already reported in a book that Trump suggested in 2020 to deny rockets in the Mexican area and then deny this. Trump rejected this presentation.
Agent: “is about the safety of our children”
In the meantime, the legal basis for possible American activities was extended by the classification of different cartels than foreign terrorist organizations. As a result, the military and secret services are available for further powers. According to DEA agent Derek Maltz, who commented on NBC News, this measure opened new scope for action. “At a certain point it is just about the safety of our children,” said Maltz.
The first changes also appear on the Mexican side. President Sheinbaum had moved 10,000 soldiers to the northern border last month, where vehicles are sought for Fentanyl. In addition, 29 alleged drug dealers were delivered to the US, including Rafael Caro Quintero, which is held responsible for the murder of a DEA agent.
