Currently, about 80,000 pensioners are working – under very unattractive conditions, explains Ingrid Korosec, chairman of the Senior Citizens’ Council. “For years I’ve been trying to bring about change here – for a variety of reasons.” Now the window is open because we are short of skilled workers and workers. Seniors are an expert pool, they have decades of experience and are worth their weight in gold for any company. Still, there would be many difficulties.
Anyone taking retirement pension and continuing to work automatically opens a new pension account and has to make new contributions for 15 years. Proposals have already been made by representatives of the Senior Citizens’ Council that provide for the abolition of pension contributions and/or a separate tax deduction for employees who already receive an old-age pension.
The government set up a working group at the beginning of this year and wanted results by the end of March. “I’m not giving up,” Korosec said. “I am hopeful that we will find a solution by the end of the autumn.” Of the 100,000 people who retire, 40,000 would like to work. “Whoever wants, must be able to.”
Periodic driving test from the age of 70
A driving test from the age of 70, as the European Commission is currently considering throughout the EU, is “out of the question” for Korosec. Health is important, not age. “I know 40-year-olds and I know 80-year-old guys.” However, it is important that fitness to drive is maintained. According to Korosec, people will still be able to have a say here at national level.
