Spö State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried now says radicalization on the internet. An age limit for the use of social networks must now be introduced as quickly as possible. A future limit may seem like 14, or even 16 years …
Shortly before Arthur A., the shooter of Graz, performed his terrible acts, he was known for posting a photo on the social media channel X (formerly Twitter).
As a measure as a result of the killing Spree, the federal government is therefore also dedicated to “dedication to stricter regulations in dealing with social media for children and adolescents”. Jörg Leichtfried-Spö State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior was already behind it. Together with his party, he now wants to introduce a fast, legal age limit for the use of networks. So far there are limitations on the individual platforms in Austria, but not uniform legal regulation, such as in Australia, where a ban on use for younger than 16 years was decided in the previous year.
“Radicalization no longer takes place in dark back rooms, but on the smartphone – often unnoticed by parents, teachers and the social environment,” Leichtfried told the “Kroon”. A limitation up to 14, or – as the greens also demand – it seems possible up to 16 years.
The fact is: radicalization on the internet has more than doubled since 2022 and the young people themselves are needed. In the last youth study, 87 percent stated that they were “higher and controlled minimum age for social media”.
