Thomas Maurer jumped into Tyrol’s Schlitterer See without hesitation on Tuesday and became a hero. The bather, who is a nurse at the hospital in Hall, pulled an 80-year-old from the water who apparently lost consciousness. After a long period of first aid, the man was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.
Thomas Maurer really only wanted to spend a relaxed and carefree day with his family at Lake Schlitterer See on Tuesday morning in fantastic swimming weather and temperatures of over 30 degrees. But suddenly, around 11:15 a.m., the trained intensive care and anesthesia nurse, who works in the interdisciplinary intensive care unit of the state hospital in Hall, became aware of an elderly man who had lost consciousness while swimming. “He was floating with his head in the water at the foot of the stairs,” says 46-year-old Vomper of the dramatic water emergency. Maurer quickly put aside his glasses and cell phone and responded with quick wit.
