Czech President Petr Pavel fears that the support of Western allies in the Ukrainian counter-offensive will not be enough. On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Pavel warned that the opportunity would soon close again.
This is also due to the upcoming elections in Ukraine, Russia and the US in 2024, Pavel explained at a NATO discussion event on Tuesday. According to him, what has been achieved should form the basis for negotiations on a ceasefire.
Only slow territorial gains
Ukraine is slowly gaining ground, the ex-general said. The trench warfare of recent months would have given the Russian side ample time to erect hundreds of kilometers of defenses, along with obstacles and minefields. Ukraine lacks air support and equipment to clear minefields, among other things.
Pavel stressed: “We have to ask ourselves: Have we given Ukraine enough resources to launch a counter-offensive that is more successful (than previous attempts)?”
