Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will travel to Washington on Thursday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. “We have the power, the ability and intelligence to overcome any obstacle,” Meloni showed, given the discussion about American rates, confidently.
At the same time, she admitted that it was a “difficult moment” and that she feels busy because of her upcoming trip to the United States. On the one hand, Meloni is close to Trump, whose inauguration in January she was the only head of a EU country. On the other hand, the good relationships must have with the European allies who have criticized Trump’s customs and other political decisions by the US president.
In recent days, the Italian head of the government has repeatedly made telephone conversations with EU Commission Head Ursula von der Leyen. This is not against Meloni’s journey to the United States. French ministers, on the other hand, have warned that the EU’s unity can be undermined if the politician only travels to Washington.
With a share of 10.7 percent of exports, the United States is the second most important export market for Italian goods such as food, machines, textiles, luxury goods, furniture, yachts or pharmaceutical products. Last year a trading surplus of 40 billion euros was reached with the United States.
