The next act in the LIVA scandal. Newly surfaced messages between Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SPÖ) and the now dismissed Brucknerhaus director Dietmar Kerschbaum are said to prove that Luger had leaked the hearing questions to Kerschbaum. The mayor of Linz apologized for this in a broadcast.
“I made a mistake and I regret it very much today.” With these words, Linz Mayor Klaus Luger addressed the public in a press statement on Tuesday afternoon. Newly discovered WhatsApp chats from 2016 and 2017 are now intended to prove that Kerschbaum received the list of questions before his official hearing – from Luger himself. The city boss of Linz is now anticipating possible messages about the chat affair and confirms that Kerschbaum gained an advantage via the documents.
“Very good choice for Linz”
He saw then that Kerschbaum was doing an excellent job as cultural manager in Burgenland. “Because I believed at the time that he was a very good choice for Linz artistically – and I still believe that today – I forwarded general questions about the hearing to him in advance. In retrospect, I regret my behavior,” Luger wrote in his letter.
“Bad example”
Kerschbaum himself was elected by the majority of a twelve-member jury and has also achieved much good with his reputation. “However, I deeply regret that in this case I set a bad example for the people of Linz as mayor. For this I would like to offer my sincere apologies and ask for forgiveness,” Luger’s statement continued. He is prepared for political demands for his resignation; he will take note of them and is also “understandable from a party political point of view.”
