In the fight against increasing online radicalization, the federal government is now investigating the introduction of a register among Islamist hate preachers. “Together we take an important step because young people in particular often receive alleged psychological support from extremists and are therefore a slight victim for further radicalization on the internet,” emphasized the Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) on Wednesday.
In the long term, a hate preacher register should be an easier recognisability of the extremists, both in the analog and in the digital world. This makes access bans possible, but also the possibility to label on digital platforms. European initiatives in this direction must be promoted and the government wants to see whether national feasibility is also possible.
“The radicalization in the digital area has many faces. Children and adolescents often fall victim to hate preachers or political extremists and later actors themselves,” said the Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) the need to introduce a register.
According to State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried (Spö), it is more important than ever in an ever -digital world to protect young people against the dangers of online radicalization and the claws of hate preachers. “It is up to us to give young people the necessary knowledge and tools to safely move in the digital world,” said Leickfried.
But according to his social environment, not only young people should also be sensitized in the sense of prevention. “The recognition of behavioral changes among young people in the social environment is often crucial. Through awareness in their own environment, everyone can make a valuable contribution to prevention work.”
Moreover, people also want to strengthen the fight against the radicalization of youth in schools. The protection of the Constitution must increasingly be sent to the educational institutions to do information work there. “Schools must transfer knowledge and at the same time strengthen the personality of children and adolescents,” said Education Minister Christoph Return (Neos).
The “Extremism prevention” project has been around since 2024. As part of workshops, students must have the opportunity to ask their questions without fear in a protected framework. “This project was originally planned until 2026. However, we evaluate the offers with a clear goal of continuing this project to prevent all forms of extremism,” Return said.
Action plan against violence
The Council of Ministers also decided on Wednesday an action plan against violence against women. The establishment of the Ministry of Women has been created together with the inner, educational and judicial department. The goal is to close existing gaps in violence.
Dick-Pic shipping also punishes by fax in the future
Minister of Justice Anna Sporrer (Spö) further announced to the Council of Ministers that sending penis photos (Dick-Pics) will become a criminal offense in the future. There should be some form of electronic communication from the legal regulation, from social media to fax.
