Application to the National Council – Child Benefit for Refugees from Ukraine

Date:

Refugees from Ukraine should receive child benefits in the future. The scheme should apply retroactively from March and be submitted to the National Council next Friday, the Ministry of Family Affairs announced. Months of negotiations preceded the project.

It is “mainly mothers and their children who have to flee and seek protection in Austria”, said Minister of the Family Susanne Raab (ÖVP). “When it comes to helping our neighbours, support is the most popular in Europe. Getting family benefits is a necessary and important step.” About 79,000 Ukrainian displaced persons have been registered in Austria since the start of the war, most of them women and children. They are subject to their own legal system in all EU countries, which means that they have not been able to receive family benefits in this country until now.

However, these are “an important additional support to cover the necessary costs”, said Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens). In concrete terms, it should be possible to take family benefits with retroactive effect from March and a corresponding application will be submitted to the National Council on Friday. The turquoise-green coalition found a solution after months of negotiations.

Last session before the summer holidays
In addition to family benefits for Ukrainians, an agreement between the federal state to fund kindergartens and an amendment to the Service Act intended to allow teachers to enter the profession from a different perspective are on the agenda of the National Council meeting . In addition, the National Council wants to withdraw the indexation of child benefits in the last meeting before the summer holidays and elect Gabriela Schwarz (ÖVP) as Ombudsman.

The FPÖ announced in advance that it would send an urgent request to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) about illegal migration. He must “finally develop a strategy beyond a tour guide,” Burgenland MP Christian Ries said in a broadcast. About 400 illegal migrants are currently arriving in Burgenland alone. Although these numbers have been rising for months, the Interior Ministry has not responded.
