Green Place Success – Bables wants to catch up with the freedom of the press

Date:

Austria climbed up a bit in the freedom of the press after the low last year. With 78.12 points, Austria is 22 of the 180 registered States. The top 10 were flown in 2015. Experts, but also media minister Andreas Babler, is not enough. The Greens see the improvement in their own success.

On 3 May the international day of freedom – and at least the direction seems to be in Austria. In the Press Freedom Index of Reporter Without Borders (RSF), Austria recovered somewhat after a historic low in the previous year (32nd place) and worked in 22nd place. The reason for rejecting yourself should not be, warn RSF Austria -President Fritz Hausjell and Secretary -General Martin Wassermair in conversation with the APA. “It is by no means good,” says Hausjell, and gives you back to the top classes.

The Spö Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler who is responsible for media also sees it very the same way. “It is clear to us: Austria should again be a Vobild -Nation in terms of freedom of press. That is why we take concrete steps: we have implemented the VFGH judgment in a very short time to strengthen ORF’s independence. My goal is to make Austria again an international freedom model for media freedom,” he explains.

Subscription for boys in the planning
People are clearly committed to securing new diversity by new financing such as regional sales promotion and my newspaper subscription and fighting against disinformation and fake news-national and European. As you know, it should have free access to “my newspaper subscription” to secure journalistic information. For this goal, 30 million euros from 2026 are explicitly provided for in the government program. This model will also be developed in the coming months.

Greens see their own success
In any case, the Greens see the reason for improving the ranking in their own government participation. During the last legislative period, new and urgent need for financing laws such as the financing of quality journalism need to implement the promotion for digital transformation or podcast promotion to combat worrying challenges in the industry.

“At the same time, existing financing for private broadcaster and non-commercial broadcast have increased and the transparency of the media have been cited. Finally, the financing and digital possibilities of public services broadcasts have been strengthened in a very complex process. The improvements in the media policy in recent years have a clear green handwriting.
