First trip abroad – Merz now provides “disorder in the world”

Date:

Less than 24 hours after his forgiveness as a German Chancellor, CDU boss Friedrich Merz has already separated for his first trip abroad. First he met in Paris in France President Emmanuel Macron. Then it goes to Warsaw. Merz also wants to underline that he wants to do a much more active foreign policy than his predecessors.

“The world is so disorderly that a German federal Chancellor has to take care of European politics more than European politics than in recent decades,” he said in Ard. The new Chancellor had already announced in the election campaign that they wanted to visit Paris and Warsaw on the first day of his term. He had met both Macron and Poland Donald Tusk several times. As an opposition leader, Merz always accused his predecessor Olaf Scholz that he had the relationship with both.

Ukraine war and migration as central issues
Supervised by Minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul, Merz wants to talk to French President Emmanuel Macron about how Europe can become more independent after the radical change in foreign policy of the United States under President Donald Trump. In Warsaw, in addition to the Russian attack war against Ukraine, it should also be about irregular migration. The CDU boss had announced a tightening of border controls and reinforced rejections from the first day of his term. However, Poland meets the measures with skepticism.

The “very big goal” of Germany
Wadephul has also set out the goals of foreign policy and said before his departure on Wednesday: “Of course, the very big goal is that we are now really taking the Franco-German Axis back in use, that we can also make pace again in Europe that we will become more ideas.” At the same time, however, it also applies to make it clear: “Our continent of course has the biggest problems in the east, especially in the east,” said Wadephul, referring to Russia. It is therefore important “that from the start we always think of Poland, fully involved, the Weimar triangle is really very, very important for the next future,” emphasized the minister, referring to Germany, France and Poland.
