The German Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) created border controls only one day after the new black-red federal government was engaged. His Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) has now responded to the innovation.
Dobrindt has assigned the federal police to reject illegal asylum seekers in the case of an asylum application. For this purpose, an oral instruction was given to the border guards. The currently 11,000 civil servants are reinforced by another 2,000 to 3,000 troops.
“Clarity, consequence and control”
He has withdrawn the opposite instruction from 2015, Dobrind said on Wednesday afternoon. The goal is to push illegal migration back step by step. The figures are still too high. “This question is about clarity, consistency and control.”
Vienna initially not impressed
In the past, the Minister of the Interior has repeatedly announced Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) that Austria would not tolerate illegal rejections. His department was not impressed by Dobrindt’s decision on Wednesday evening: “Austria welcomes Germany in general in the fight against tractor Mafia and illegal migration,” Karner emphasized. And added: “We assume that the German authorities adhere to the European legal system for all measures taken,” said Karner. Austria is located in all measures near the German authorities. Karner exchanged phone with Dobrindt last Saturday.
Karner refers to success on the border of Burgenland
According to the ÖVP politician, Austria has taken enormous measures against tractor Mafia and illegal migration in recent years. “That is why the attacks of illegal immigrants have fallen enormously,” emphasized Karner. This is clearly recognizable, for example based on the illegal border crossings in Burgenland. In the KW 41 there were 3600 attacks in 2022 (October 10 – October 16), in calendar week 17 in this year only 19.
Germany sends illegal immigrants back to Austria without an asylum
Since 13 September 2015, the German Federal Police has run control stations at the Germany-Austrian border on Kiefersfelden/Kufstein intersection (a 93). The traffic from Austria is followed by three officials. Suspicious vehicles are derived and sought. When illegal migrants are discovered, they come to the Federal Police Inspectorate Rosenheim. If they cannot call them plausible reasons for asylum, they will be sent back to Austria. In the previous year, the Federal Police Rosenheim seized 3,300 illegal migrants.
The German rejections of asylum seekers are legally controversial. The Black and Red Coalition Agreement agrees that this should be done in coordination with neighboring countries.
