The Mexican government has now sued Google Maps for the renamination of the Gulf of Mexico in “Gulf of America”. According to President Claudia Sheinbaum, the online service understood the arrangement of US President Donald Trump wrongly.
Sheinbaum asked Google to adhere to the formulation of Trump’s decree with which the name change was initiated in January. After the argumentation of Sheinbaum, the regulation of Trump only refers to the continental basis, which belongs to the United States. “The American government only calls the part on the American continental basis of America, not the entire wave because it does not have the authority for this,” said the president. Google must also handle it that way.
According to Trump’s decree, Google, which belongs to the parent company Alphabet, has the name change in his map service in February. Since then, customers in the United States have seen the name “Golf of America”, customers in Mexico “Golf of Mexico” and customers in the rest of the world. According to Google, this is so common in controversial place names.
Do the draft law in the US Senate?
On Thursday, the American House of Representatives approved a draft law for the name change. In the Senate, however, the design is likely to fail because the Democrats are needed there.
