The ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) is in the lead in Romania’s parliamentary elections; according to exit polls from Sunday evening, she received 26 percent of the votes cast. According to exit polls, various right-wing parties together achieved around 30 percent. Romanian political scientists expressed cautious relief at the results of the post-election surveys. Based on these figures, a “cordon sanitary” around the right-wing populists is certainly possible.
The reform party USR and the Liberals (PNL) each received 15.5 percent of the votes cast. The small party SOS of right-wing extremist EU MP Diana Sosoaca appears to have exceeded the parliamentary threshold of five percent and amounts to 5.5 percent. The small party POT of ultra-right candidate Calin Georgescu, which emerged victorious in the first round of the presidential elections, has also reached parliament. The Hungarian Association (UDMR) will probably barely reach five percent, but in this case only the end result will provide clarity.
According to political scientists, the pro-European parties will continue to form the majority; a three-party coalition consisting of PSD, USR and PNL or a four-party coalition (including the UDMR) is conceivable.
Important foreign voices
Just like last Sunday on the occasion of the presidential elections, the Romanian authorities have set up a total of 950 polling stations abroad, of which 17 are in Austria – six in Vienna, two in Salzburg, Graz and Linz and one in Austria. Eisenstadt, Sankt Pölten, Bregenz, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt.
The votes of Romanians abroad were decisive in the presidential elections. However, the result is greatly doubted. The Constitutional Court ordered the recount of all votes on Thursday.
