Determines the direction – Babler: “Europe must not become a fortress”

Date:

Only a few hours after his election as the new SPÖ chairman (see video above), Andreas Babler questioned himself about his positions in the “ZiB 2” interview. He spoke out for clear asylum procedures and against Orbanisation. He also provided insight into how he intends to reunite the party.

The SPÖ would have a “difficult hour”, but there is “no longer any doubt” about the new result, Andreas Babler said in “ZiB 2” on Tuesday evening. He had overcome that a notary had been consulted. He is also in favor of more participation, he replied when asked how he now wanted to convince the voters of Pamela Rendi-Wagner and Hans Peter Doskozil.

Of course, the result is very close, he will have many conversations with everyone in the party to reflect the whole reality. At his express request, the next party congress is brought forward. There, personnel issues would be decided again.

asks relationships
For example, under Babler the SPÖ should acquire a more authentic language and increasingly question the prevailing circumstances. The previous mayor of the town of Traiskirchen (Lower Austria) can imagine that he intervenes in vacancy and excess profits. If that’s called left, he can live with that. About his views, the politician indicated that he thought it was important to take action against poverty.

“Secondary which side the fence is on”
Other topics of the interview included asylum and migration issues and the war in Ukraine. “Europe cannot become a fortress,” Babler said, pointing out that it is of secondary importance which side a fence is on. Instead, clear asylum procedures are needed. Citizens are interested in who gets asylum and who doesn’t. It is about connecting to concrete life situations. Escape and children’s rights are indivisible anyway.

With regard to the war in Ukraine, the neo-chairman mainly stated that the aggressor Russia should be clearly mentioned and that this would have caused a lot of suffering. According to Babler, the European security structure is also dependent on other developments, such as the US elections next year. He is also concerned about anti-inflation policies and climate protection. He will also discuss the legalization of cannabis with his fellow party members.

More communication as “new style”
More communication should become the new party style. On Tuesday, Babler already exchanged thoughts with former chairman Pamela Rendi-Wagner that Doskozil had not yet called him back. A future coalition including the ÖVP can imagine the party leader, although that should work in itself. Examples mentioned were a course to the right in flight and migration, the dismantling of health insurers and working longer.
