After aid for Moscow, Blinken promises a “tough response” for North Korea

Date:

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wants to respond to North Korea’s military support for Russia in the war in Ukraine. Blinken said during a joint appearance with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels on Wednesday that North Korea would “receive a harsh response” to its troops’ participation in the fighting.

Rutte again called on his allies to provide more support to Ukraine. “We must do more to ensure that Ukraine can prevail,” the Dutchman demanded. NATO and the EU fear that future US President Donald Trump will cut his country’s billions in military aid to Ukraine and strike a deal with Russia at the expense of Kiev. Blinken wanted to discuss further action in Brussels with representatives of NATO and the EU until Trump takes office on January 20.

According to the US State Department, North Korean soldiers are involved in “combat operations” near the Ukrainian border. Most of the more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers sent to eastern Russia have been moved to the western Kursk region, Foreign Ministry spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters on Tuesday. There the soldiers “began to participate in combat operations with the Russian armed forces.”

Zelensky spoke of losses among Kim forces in Kursk
A week ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that North Korean soldiers had already taken part in the battle against the Ukrainian army in the Kursk region. 11,000 soldiers from North Korea are currently in Kursk to support Kremlin forces, and “losses have already been suffered,” Zelensky said.

Russia and North Korea have further deepened their security cooperation in recent months. Last weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin put into effect the June defense treaty with North Korea. In it, both countries commit to “immediate military assistance” if either of them is attacked.

National air raid siren in Ukraine
Meanwhile, authorities in Ukraine sounded a nationwide air raid siren on Wednesday. The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, warned on the online service Telegram that Putin “is currently launching a missile attack on Kiev.” The Ukrainian air force had earlier warned that a missile had entered the country’s airspace and was heading towards Kiev. “Danger! Missile in Chernihiv region on its way to Kiev region,” she said on Telegram.

The shelling follows a week of brutal attacks, including one on the birthplace of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which killed a 32-year-old mother and her three children. Last weekend, Russia and Ukraine fired a record number of threats at each other.
