There must be no savings on security – but costs in the asylum area and administration fall. The Ministry of the Interior installs the figures open for 2025: the budget is 4.85 billion euros.
There is hardly a more sensitive area where austerity should be used as carefully as in the Ministry of the Interior. Two days before the Spö financial minister Markus Marterbauer retains his highly expected budget speech, the Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner now moves the savings plans for the police apparatus.
Karner points out that the years of and consistent fight against illegal migration is now pays off: the financial effort in the asylum area will decrease enormously this year. The number of basic care people, currently 62,400, was greatly reduced and therefore also the operating costs.
100 million euros more for safety
Instead of 788 million, financial needs will fall to 693 million. This is a saving of 94.2 million euros compared to 2024 in the asylum area. If it stays with this development, the Ministry of the Interior expects a further decrease in asylum applications in 2026. In the budget, 621 million euros are then provided for in the asylum area.
The number of active care institutions for asylum seekers can also be reduced from more than 30 to currently eight locations. The closures run everywhere in Austria of Leoben and Kindberg via Mondsee to Semmering.
Expenditure is not reduced when the task for safety core. The entire area will increase in 2025 from EUR 4,011 billion to EUR 4,155 billion. That is an increase of 100 million compared to the previous year.
But where is saved in the police apparatus? There are considerable cuts in the administration. In the central office, only every third open or free position is filled. Saving is also stored in representation and events.
Savings are also intended for advanced training and seminars – which do not serve directly with the executive service. Business trips, subsidies and public relations are reduced. Another point is the evaluation of the fleet, where savings options must be found.
