The professor of Islamic religious education outlines in detail how quickly Islamists can be democratically elected: “A representative of political Islam alone can get 40,000 to 60,000 preferential votes. “You have to take this seriously,” says Aslan.
Why are politicians wary when it comes to Islamists?
But the expert is more concerned about the fact that “political Islam is also active in many established parties.” Aslan: “The SPÖ is simply a good home for such people.” This “used to be the case with the ÖVP and the Greens as well.” Aslan explains why: “Parties are simply very wary of such fixed structures. This is of course partly due to the fact that such structures also promise votes.”
Hamas even owns real estate in Austria
But Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has further fueled extremist currents in the country: “Hamas has a strong and active infrastructure in Austria, including real estate, aid organizations and mosque communities that support its activities,” Aslan said.
Austria is the perfect home for political Islam, “because the country can carry out its activities unnoticed and freely,” the expert said. Moreover, Islamist groups own “their businesses, their markets and their institutions,” which makes it particularly difficult to control their activities.
Expert urges active fight against professional structure
“Fighting these professional structures is a difficult process,” Aslan explains. “But we have to work on it. This is an important task for a democratic society. If we want to protect the democratic structures in Austria, we have to actively fight the growing, professional infrastructure of political Islam.”
