Belgium does not come from the nuclear energy. The Belgian Parliament has now decided to extend the duration of the existing nuclear reactors. The Belgian government is even planning to build even more reactors.
The parliament voted for the nuclear phase with a large majority. 102 MPs were for an extension of the duration of the existing reactors, eight voted against it. There were 31 abstentions. Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s right -wing government also plans to build new reactors. Belgium currently has two nuclear power stations with seven reactors – however, three have already been removed from the network.
Leave legally defined
In Belgium, the nuclear phase was determined by law in 2003. Originally the other reactors of the two nuclear power stations in the city near the city of Antwerp and Tiange 2025 had to be eliminated. But the debate has been going on for years.
In view of the care for the safety of energy supply and with a view to the Russian attack war in Ukraine, the government of Belgium had decided in 2022 to postpone the nuclear phasing out for ten years. A kiln of the two Belgian nuclear power plants must stay on the network by 2035.
Defects in reactors
In Germany, the Belgian nuclear people from the seventies and 80s give repeated discussions. Defects were found several times in reactors in the neighboring country, such as distressed concrete parts.
Among other things, the North Rhine-Westfalische city of Aachen and the German federal government repeatedly demolished dismantling in the past. The Tiange Power Plant is approximately 60 kilometers from Aachen. Germany decided in 2002 the nuclear phase -in 2023 the last nuclear power stations were eliminated.
