Federal President Alexander van der Bellen lived on Tuesday the budget of Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (Spö). In a letter to the “Krone” readers, he divided his thoughts and also looked back on further events in the past week, such as the 70th anniversary of the State Contract.
Despite the difficult economic situation and “stressful news”, the federal president was optimistic. We should hold on together and take responsibility – “in small and big things”.

Dear Austrians and all people who live in our country, dear readers of the Kronen Zeitung!
Next week I will travel to Japan with an Austrian delegation to take care of the friendship between our countries and especially to deepen our economic relationships. This is now important because our country faces a major challenge: how do we put our economy – and therefore our budget – back on track, so that our good life in Austria has financially sustainable legs?
The budget speech of the Minister of Finance this week was one of the many signs that things can no longer go as before. How shall we respond? We are all challenged! Our joint project “Austria” actively needs us to do. Just looking and commenting will not be enough. We need courage, cohesion and willingness to take responsibility – in small and big things.
Dear readers, this week we also thought of the state contract on the occasion of the 70th birthday – a great achievement of the time, the interest of which we can hardly understand today in their entire scope. A flourishing country came from rubble and ash that managed to control the large conflicts of the post -war period – and thus write a unique economic success story of coexistence.
At the time, something succeeded that was unthinkable for it.
If we think today to bring our beautiful Austria back to the top of the European top in education, research, in the social and health system and as a business location- this can be difficult to imagine in the light of many stressful messages. But: if we really want it, it will succeed.
Let us develop a new spirit of coexistence.
