The tightened border controls at the external boundaries of Germany present the federal police against mass challenges. While Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) refers to rapid results and a significant increase in rejections, the Police Union (GDP) increases the alarm: the measures can only be kept in the current form for a few weeks.
“We can only do this because the tasks have been changed, the further training of the units is currently on ice and the reduction of overtime has been stopped,” Andreas Roßkopf, chairman of the Federal Police in GDP, told the Funke MediGruppe. More than 1000 stand -or police officers are constantly used along the border -with drastic effects on normal service activities.
The motivation is high, but there is no lack
The load can also be felt on location, such as at the Lauterburg border crossing in Rijnland-Palatinate. “The colleagues are at the checkpoint in wind and weather ten hours a day,” says Carsten Sottong of the GDP district group in Kaiserslautern. The motivation is high, but there is a lack of staff, technical equipment – and sometimes just the protection of the sun or your own working containers.
Effort with expiration date
The police -Union in fact supports the political goal of limiting irregular migration through targeted checks. But Roßkopf warns: “The police can only keep the intensive checks for a few weeks.” It is already clear that the current effort is not sustainable in the long term.
There is also criticism from politics. While the SPD interior expert Lars Castellucci warns that uncoordinated measures can jeopardize the European shelter system, CDU interior politician Alexander Throm defends the course. The sharpened controls are needed to make Germany less attractive as a “migration box”.
Disagreement on effect – Agreement on stress
Despite the high number of rejections – according to Dobrindt, it has risen almost half within a week – the number of new asylum applications remains stable according to the media reports. Although the effectiveness of the measures is politically disputed, there is an extensive unity at some point: the federal police reach its limits.
GDP therefore urgently requires extra personnel and material resources. However, the Federal Police Inspectorate Kaiserslautern is silent about specific questions about reinforcements – with regard to “tactical considerations”.
