The former security advisor of Donald Trump, Mike Waltz, is again in the headlines. The Republican left a lot of information about the network in unprofessional ways. A hack is probably much larger than originally assumed.
In the case of a hacker attack on a communication service used by Waltz at the beginning of May, huge amounts of data were apparently refined. The Reuters news agency identified a data record with leaked information from more than 60 different government officials who exchanged telemessage. With the app, users of Messenger Services such as Signal can archive messages.
The material comes from the American organization that has divided the refusal of secrets, which claims to archive and provide chopped and leaked documents in the public interest. The size of the now known data leak reveals further heavy security gaps within the US government.
Leck contains sensitive data
The data collection evaluated by Reuters contains material from disaster helpers, customs officers, various American diplomats, at least one employee of the White House and members of the secret service. The tests tested include a period from about a day to 4 May.
Many of the messages were incomplete, and therefore the full content of the data could not be verified. But in more than half a dozen of the cases, the telephone numbers were assigned to their owners. A recipient of a intercept SMS message that had requested help from the FEMA Disaster Protection Authority confirmed the authenticity of the leaked message.
A financial service provider, the news of which was also intercepted, also confirmed their authenticity.
Travel plans are open to the public
During the limited assessment there were no clearly sensitive content or chats of Waltz or other cabinet members. However, some chats seemed to influence the travel plans of high -ranking government officials, such as apparently organizational aspects of an event in the Vatican or the alleged journey from American representatives to Jordan.
Reuters contacted all detectable people for a statement. Some confirmed their identity, but most of them did not respond or referred to their respective authorities. The owner of Telemessage, the company of SMARSH based in Portland, did not respond to questions about the leaked information. The app has been put on hold since 5 May for security -related reasons.
The White House said in a message that it was “aware of the cyber security incident at Smarsh”, but was not expressed about the use of the platform. For a long time, telemessage was hardly visible outside the government and financial circles.

The service and the security scandal were only known for a photo of the Reuters press agency on April 30 – who showed how Waltz used the app during a cabinet session. The 51-year-old Republican has now had to submit his position as a security adviser of Trump.
He was previously criticized when he accidentally invited a journalist for a signal chat group with other high -ranking politicians in March. Details of an upcoming American bombing in Yemen were described in the wire.
