Mohamed VI and Sánchez meet in Rabat with immigration control on the table

“I respect what has been approved in Congress,” the president of the Spanish government said before the meeting, but “I reaffirm that this is the best position in Spain’s public interest,” he insisted.

This Thursday, King Mohamed VI of Morocco received the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, at the Royal Palace of Rabat. One of the main issues on the table is immigration control, and the other is the Sahara. Sánchez was received at the Royal Palace by the Moroccan protocol services and was given access to the room where the Alaouite monarch was already waiting for him.

The two shook hands and had a short conversation, after which they were joined by some representatives of their respective governments.

On the Spanish side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Ricardo Díaz-Hochleitner, were present.

The king was accompanied by his adviser, Fuad Ali Himma, the foreign minister, Naser Burita, and the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich.

“I respect what’s passed in Congress”the president confirmed, defending the step he took with his March 14 letter to Mohamed VI, in which he confirmed that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is “the most solid, credible and realistic basis” for reaching a solution. “I reaffirm that this is the best position in the general interest of Spain”has insisted.

The president does not want to prejudge the question of whether his meeting with the monarch will lead to concrete agreements regarding the reopening the borders or the ‘Cross the Strait’ operationbut has assured that there will be news in the coming days.

In any case, he has insisted that his meeting today is “important” and is a first step and that little by little progress and concrete steps will be taken.
